One of Chicago’s top street photographers, Gene tells stories through powerful imagery taking influence from the city’s architecture and urban environment.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED OFF BEING A PHOTOGRAPHER?

I've always been fascinated by photography since high school. Only until several years ago, I started shooting with my phone, taking pictures of the city's architecture and streets. I really loved capturing everyday moments of the people here. From there I decided to invest more time learning how to shoot and properly use a camera.

WHAT DOES CHAMPION BRAND MEAN TO YOU?

Champion to me is all about being classic and original. It's always been a classic since day one, being both comfortable and stylish at the same time. What I love most is that they don't copy; they don't follow trends— Champion is a style of its own.

WHO WOULD BE YOUR DREAM CREATIVE? ARTIST TO COLLABORATE WITH? (LIVING OR DEAD)

I'm a music lover first, so I would have to say Bob Marley. Of course he has inspired me through his music, but he's also discussed many important matters that are still relevant to this day: from racism, politics, war, peace, and love. I would just love to collaborate with him to understand more of his art and vision.

ANY ADVICE WHO WOULD GIVE TO SOMENE WHO IS TRYING TO BREAK INTO THE CREATIVE INDUSTRY?

Take time to create and work on your craft.Discover an identity through your work. Be consistent, be unique, and always be inspired.

WHAT ARE SOME HIDDEN GEMS IN CHICAGO THAT EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW?

It's not necessarily a hidden gem, but all throughout the summer, there are festivalseverywhere. From food fests to music fests. Festivals are definitely a big thing.
