Have you ever picked up a pack of crayons and only witnessed 50 pieces of the same color? Or when shopping for new paint to decorate your apartment you noticed every color palette was of the same shade? Not likely. That’s because having a variety of colors and characteristics ensures cohesiveness and beauty in the final product. With the launch of the New Balance 247 'The Collective,' VILLA introduces the meaning of celebrating a group of artists and artwork working together.
As we surface throughout our neighborhoods and communities, we become a part of this contemporary society that is greatly affected by interactions with visual culture. From murals, tags, stickers, graffiti, rollers and installations, artwork enriches a vibrant community of artists every day. But without the self-awareness and self-confidence of one’s own work, it becomes almost impossible to exist among others. Like a crayon box, not a single color stands alone. To form a basic color, one must have value, pigment, saturation, and hue. Without these elements, the message of art becomes too quiet and is easily ignored. Working together as a collective to form artistic expression creates a shared experience for everyone who witnesses it.
Community art is being able to transform an ordinary space into beautiful sceneries in an attempt to affect community members. It's an excuse to stop and take a look at what's right in front of you and creates reflections of ourselves and the cities we live in. Most importantly, a collective teaches us that a blank canvas becomes a masterpiece when it provides a combined collection of colors, shapes and diverse ideas.
