The Retro Vault

History Behind The ‘Retro’

The first retirement of Michael Jordan might have been a devastating moment for Basketball fans, but following his leave sparked a sneaker initiative for the Jordan Brand. The idea to release older models of Air Jordans made its mark on the court, later being named as Retro Jordans. As an enhanced version of the OG Air Jordan, Nike decided to bring back the first three models MJ wore in his playing days. Unfortunately, fans weren’t too impressed by these releases, but Nike didn’t stop there. In 1998, after MJ’s second retirement, the newly founded Jordan Brand slightly modified the shoe to attract more people of that generation. Sneakerheads today treat the ‘Retro’ Jordan like collectible items, stored in a protective vault to showcase only for style, rather than performance. As a high demand sneaker, Retro Jordans have become one of the hottest releases week after week to the tune of over a billion dollars in retail sales annually. As the Retro Jordan continues to rise to stardom, the vault becomes too heavy, seeking to a level of golden treasures.

OG vs Retro

Difference between OG Air Jordans and Retro Jordans

The fact that Michael Jordan has become so influential in the sneaker culture, bringing popular footwear to men, women, and kids all across the world, is mind blowing! Since 1985, Nike has collaborated with MJ to design and sell these sneakers under his guidance. But how many people actually know the difference between OG and Retro labels? Don’t worry about it. The VILLA brand is coming to you with some more Jordan Knowledge:

• The major difference between the Retro and Air Jordan is that the Retro shoes are re-releases of the original Air Jordan with minor changes because of technological advances and also in the material that is used.
• Retro Jordans are either the shoes that MJ wore in his playing days or the classic Air Jordans that have been slightly modified to attract people today.
• There are some Jordan shoes out of so many models that have been rereleased several times though there are some that have not been retried till date. These are labeled the originals or OG.
