As we visited high schools across the country, young men told us that they "don't like to read." We discovered that these young men were interested in reading outside of the classroom as long as the subject held their attention. So, we started the book club to not only get the boys to read more, but to enhance their vocabulary and comprehension skills, which often exposes them to a world beyond where they live. We were excited when a partnership was created with the Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts in Stone Mountain, GA to create book clubs in cities across the country.

DTLR coordinates and sponsors football camps with NFL players in Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Charlotte, and the Washington, DC Metro Area. These free camps, which are open to school aged football players, are run by one the nation's premier group of coaches, Y-Sportz. However, our goal is to not only teach skills and techniques to the student athletes but to also emphasize the importance of being well-rounded student athletes with the emphasis on "student". In an effort to reach this goal we incorporate information for both the player and the parents about SAT & ACT requirements through a partnership with Bell Curves Inc as well as offer discounted test preparation classes to camp attendees. We also partner with Tag Cast Sports, a sports marketing company that offers web-based video highlights of high school athletes to colleges and university recruiters, to host informational sessions for the athletes' parents to assist them with ways to prepare and help their student athlete excel in higher education, sports, and the recruitment process.
Each year, with the help of an outside management company, DTLR makes scholarship funds available to employees pursuing higher education. As a company, it is important that we support our employees in their pursuit to grow. And, it is our hope that by doing this we grow our staff from the inside and establish an exceptional retention rate.
DTLR, a Baltimore-based, independent, urban retail chain with more than 80 stores in 11 states and a demonstrated commitment to the community, will launch its campaign to collect shoes for Soles4Souls on November 23, 2012. With 1 in 4 adults in the world living on less than one dollar a day, basic necessities like shoes are not readily available. A pair of shoes can protect an individual’s feet from cuts and infection that can be life threatening if untreated.
Starting November 23, 2012 – December 31, 2012, individuals can drop off their new or gently worn shoes at any of the participating locations. The shoes donated will be used to support the charity’s relief efforts, as well as their micro-enterprise program. Formed as a relief effort following the 2004 Southeast Asian tsunami, Soles4Souls has donated more than 19 million pairs of shoes across 128 countries.
“Bringing relief to people in need fits perfectly with our company’s mission,” said DTLR Community Outreach Manager Sherri Goodall. “We are delighted that we can help people around the world experience a higher quality of life through this campaign," she said.
Soles4Souls partners with progressive companies in the footwear and fashion industries like DTLR to directly impact the lives of people suffering from natural disasters or striving to break free from poverty.
“We deeply appreciate this commitment by DTLR and its customers,” said Keith Woodley, Chief Development Officer of Soles4Souls. “From our experiences over the past seven years, we are certain that Company products will result in inspiring personal stories from individuals who have witnessed transformation among their families and communities.”
